Rabbits need a lot more exercise than cage living will provide.
To the respondent immediately above..you are so wrong that they do not require exercise for optimum health.
Our domestic rabbits wild cousins have an average range of 3-8 acres of daily roaming and our domestic rabbits NEED time to run and play. A well socialized house-rabbit will peform happy little '; binkies';..jumps for joy they're often called. A rabbit that lives in a cage and is not allowed frequent exercise and out of cage time is more likely to end up with behavioral and physical problems.
I pity the rabbit owned by one who disagrees with that.

Edit AGAIN to note: The one cottontail rabbit that I rehabbed from an orphan and returned to the wild on my property I have seen roam over the course of 3 acres in one day and return to his ';form'; ( the name of the depression they make to form their home) When he was in the process of habituation to the property and would return to his cage he would play outside and run for several hours sometimes over a half acre back and forth and this was daily. 3 hours a day is good. As much as you can provide outside the cage time is best. However, the information below about them coming out only to feed is in error based on numerous studies and from my own personal observation of many rabbits here over the past 20 years as well as the one closely documented case of my own rehabbing of one cottontail. He doesn't allow me to touch him any longer but I can sit within a few feet from him and toss him banana and oats as treats. How much excersie does a rabbit need?
A rabbit needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy. Rabbits left in cages with no exercise can become overweight, difficult to breed, and can develop gut stasis.
We have a run that we put our rabbits in. Its a large fenced in area where they can get out and move around. We try to get them in there every couple of days. Three hours a day would be plenty. The wild rabbits around us stay in the same area near their den, come out to eat and thats about it.
I'd give your rabbit some toys as well to play with while they are in the cage. Golf balls, macaroni and cheeses boxes (empty of course) and toilet paper rolls all make good toys.
We have articles about exercise and toys on our site that may be of additional help to you.
Rabbits should be out of the cage for around 1-4 hours a day. Not only do they need it for exercise, but for stimulation. They like to see and play with new things.
Rabbits are not like dogs, they don't need daily exercise they are pretty happy just having a large cage to hop around in. If you want to take your rabbit out that's great, it will help make him more people friendly but as far as extra exercise it's not needed.
A rabbit needs no exercise. You feed him to the python for a good tender meal.
